Mbappé Snaps Messi’s Champions League Record

For much of this season’s UEFA Champions League campaign, Kylian Mbappé has had to hear about his goal-scoring drought. That ended on Wednesday against İstanbul Başakşehir F.K. at the Parc des Princes.

The match comes a day after a racist incident involving a UEFA official forced Başakşehir and PSG players to walk off the pitch in protest.

Starting where that game left off, Neymar Jr. got PSG off to a blistering start with two brilliant goals and erased any doubt of who would be winning this match.

Late in the first half, Mitchel Bakker appeared to score PSG’s third goal but a penalty was called instead. Neymar is traditionally PSG’s penalty taker and being on a hat-trick, few would have thought he would give up the easy goal-scoring opportunity, but that’s exactly what he did.

Handing the ball to Mbappé, the Frenchman stepped up and blasted a shot past the keeper. It was his first Champions League goal of 2020 and according to CBS Sports, he is now the youngest player to reach 20 Champions League goals (21 years and 11 months), overtaking the great Lionel Messi (22 years and 8 months).

Now that Mbappé has found the back of the net, the flood gates are open with another 45 minutes to play, we could see a few more goals from the 21-year-old.
