Former Atletico Madrid and current Sao Paulo defender Juanfran has had numerous battles against some of the best attacking talents of this era, including against Neymar.
The current Paris Saint-Germain star battled against Juanfran during numerous FC Barcelona and Atletico Madrid duels over the last decade.
Neymar was on the end of many wins in league play, but Juanfran and his side had the edge twice in the UEFA Champions League knockout stage.
For Juanfran, he views Neymar as one of the most creative on-ball forwards he has faced in his lengthy career. The former La Liga winner spoke to the Brazilian-based show Desimpedidos about just what it is like to go up against Neymar.
“On the pitch, I would have liked everyone to be able to face him,” Juanfran said. “It’s very difficult. When I faced him, he was young and even stronger than now, although he is more mature today.
“I had a lot of bickering with him, but it stayed on the pitch. Today I have no problem with him and wish him the best. It’s very difficult to play against him. He has a game that challenges those who defend against him. It’s his way of playing.”
Neymar did have his grand battles against Juanfran, and they were some of his best showings during his time with the Catalan side. He sure had to work for every shot attempt and dribble against Diego Simeone’s Atletico side.
