Former PSG Defender Discusses on Why Tuchel Has Struggled This Season

Paris Saint-Germain manager Thomas Tuchel has not had it all go his way this season. While PSG currently sits in first place in the Ligue 1 standings, the side did begin the league season on a losing streak and has had a difficult time in the UEFA Champions League group stage. Still, Tuchel remains the manager of PSG.

Former PSG defender Christophe Jallet has watched PSG this season and is not thoroughly impressed with the team’s overall results. In an interview with France Bleu, he was asked whether Tuchel should be sacked as a result of PSG’s up-and-down play this season. Jallet did not pick a side in this managerial dilemma, but he did touch on several factors that have hindered the team’s play this season.

“It’s not for me to make this decision and position myself for it,” Jallet said. “Afterwards, there are results. Frankly, coaching is extremely difficult today. And Thomas Tuchel really has no luck either. Is the fact that there are so many injured a consequence of the work of the staff he has chosen? I do not know.

“But in any case, composing the teams at the moment with a minimum of players, and its biggest stars on the side, it is not easy. He pays a little for the broken pipes. But when a team is doing a little less well, which is the case for PSG in the Champions League, the fuse is the person we turn to. So he is in danger, of course.”

Jallet also spoke on just what makes a manager in club football.

“For me, the coach is the symbol of authority,” Jallet said. “It is not an easy job. And even if sometimes you can have a few misplaced egos, you have to know how to put it aside and tell yourself that the coach is always trying to do the best.”

In Tuchel’s case, he has at least done a fine job in managing the many characters and personalities on the PSG roster.
