Deschamps Downplays Any Rumored Tension Between PSG and French National Team Following Decision to Call Up Mbappe

Paris Saint-Germain forward Kylian Mbappe is currently in the midst of a dilemma between his club and the French national team. The French forward recently missed the team’s home league fixture against Stade Rennais due to complications with his hamstring. PSG surely would have preferred to have him stay with the club over the November international break to rest and recover from the issue, but French national team manager Didier Deschamps still decided to call him up.

Deschamps provided a small bit of information during a press conference on Monday regarding Mbappe’s current availability. As PSG announced earlier, Deschamps confirmed (via Le Parisien) that Mbappe will continue to be in the care of the French national team’s medical staff.

“For those who have concerns, there is a medical check-up,” Deschamps said. “We will see Tuesday too. This is valid for Kylian and the others. It is in the hands of the medical staff who have already proven their competence.”

Deschamps and PSG sporting director Leonardo have had some disagreements this year, including with the latter’s criticism of the French national team’s handling of Mbappe’s positive coronavirus test in September. Now, Deschamps is downplaying there being any poor relations between the French national team and PSG over his decision to call up Mbappe for this month’s international fixtures.

“Who says relationship means exchange,” Deschamps said. “Some of you are saying wrong things. I’m not here to say I’ve spoken to X or Z. We’re doing it right. There are exchanges between the medical staff. The goal is to protect the players. It is not specific to PSG. I have no worries. We are responsible enough.”

PSG sure hopes to have Mbappe back with the club following the current international break without any setbacks regarding his hamstring issue.
