Lille Defender is Confident his Club Can Contend With PSG in Ligue 1 This Season

For years around this point in the season, Paris Saint-Germain has typically been in sole possession of first place in the Ligue 1 table by a significant margin.

This time around, PSG does not hold sole possession of first place in the league standings. Instead, it is Lille OSC that is currently at the top of the table with 17 points after seven games. Lille is carrying over its momentum from last season, where it finished fourth in the final Ligue 1 standings.

The expectations are for PSG to soon regain the top spot in the league. But for Lille defender Jose Fonte, he believes that this current run from his side is not a fluke. Fonte declared Lille a serious Ligue 1 contender during a pre-match press conference (via L’Equipe) ahead of his team’s Europa League group stage opener.

“Everyone knows that PSG is the champion,” Fonte said. “They have top world players. But Lille have the capacity to beat them. After 38 matches, you have to be consistent. So I want to motivate my teammates to surpass themselves and to be consistent. We will see what we will be capable of. I want each match to be separated from each other.”

Lille is one of two teams in Ligue 1 that has not lost a fixture so far this season. The club still has ways to go before it can be considered a serious contender to win Ligue 1 in the ongoing campaign.
