Even though Paris Saint-Germain failed to win the UEFA Champions League competition this past season, Presnel Kimpembe still appreciates the daunting run that the team made.
PSG managed to put to an end multiple narratives that centered on its play in the Champions League knockout stage. The Ligue 1 side delivered in crucial moments over the competition and reached the Champions League final for the first time since the 1990s. In speaking to L’Equipe (via Canal Supporters), Kimpembe reflected on this past season’s competition and hit on just why this run was special for the team.
“It’s still a defeat,” Kimpembe said. “It necessarily leaves a bitter taste. But when you take the time to analyze, you realize that what we have achieved is something big.
“We managed to show that we were a team. We managed to be more united, to have the same goal and everyone put their ego aside.”
Marquinhos was promoted to team captain following Thiago Silva’s PSG departure. Kimpembe may be in line to fill the vice-captain role and for the French talent, it would mean a lot to him.
“Vice-captain of PSG?” Kimpembe said. “A lot of pride and responsibility. If it was to be taken, I would gladly take it. But I know Marqui is the new captain. I am someone who likes challenges, responsibilities, and who likes pressure. It is a dream of any to be able, one day, to become captain of this club.”
Kimpembe is currently on international duty with the France national team for UEFA Nations League fixtures.
