Report: Chelsea Showed Interest in Areola Before his Loan Move to Fulham

It became well known for weeks that Paris Saint-Germain was seeking a buyer for goalkeeper Alphonse Areola. PSG finally found a suitor for the talent on Wednesday as the club sent him to Premier League side Fulham on a season-long loan move.

Before the deal was completed, Chelsea FC was one team that showed an interest in signing Areola, according to a report from Le10Sport. The report mentions that Chelsea viewed the goalkeeper as solely an option. If the club had elected to pursue Areola, the Blues would have used help from a former teammate of Areola, Thiago Silva, to help convince the goalkeeper to join on as well.

As the report alluded to, Ligue 1 side Rennes also expressed interest in signing Areola before he departed for Fulham. Rennes sought a possible one-year loan deal, but there were no reports on whether the French side would have entertained taking on a permanent transfer deal.
