Report: Atletico Madrid Offered Cavani a One-Year Contract Deal

Former Paris Saint-Germain forward Edinson Cavani’s time as a free agent could soon come to an end. Atletico Madrid has offered Cavani a one-year contract deal with an option for a second year, according to a report from Goal España.

The two sides were in recent contact over the past week and Atletico proceeded to make an offer to Cavani, per the report. This one-year offer from Atletico to Cavani has an option for another season if the club qualifies for the UEFA Champions League competition for the following campaign. The report alludes that this is the final offer from Atletico as it seems that the club does not want to get into a back-and-forth with Cavani over the potential contract deal. Atletico also does not aim to pay Cavani a €10 million net per year salary, so he must also lower his high wage demands in order to make the deal possible.

Before Atletico can even sign Cavani, the club still has a major hurdle to go through. Atletico’s board must be able to offload current forward Diego Costa in order to free up space for Cavani in the wage bill and depth chart. Atletico has not yet found a suitor for Costa, and it will be even more complicated for the club to do so as the current transfer window is set to close in early October.

At the moment, there have been no reports of any other club offering a free transfer contract deal to Cavani. So for the Uruguayan, this could end up being the only contract offer that he may end up receiving from now until the end of the transfer window. It has become transparent that many clubs do not want to meet his high wage request, so Cavani may have to give in to his demands if he wants to play football for a trophy-contending club this season.
