After Paris Saint-Germain’s 1-0 loss in the UEFA Champions League final to FC Bayern Munich, Marquinhos took to the microphone to speak with RMC Sport.
There’s no denying that the 26-year-old is disappointed by the result since he stated that finals are won, not played. Nonetheless, Marquinhos did step back and say that he’s proud of the journey that PSG went on to reach the final.
“The victory did not come. A final is not played, it is won, but we did not succeed. But on the other hand, we are all proud of our team. No one believed in our journey. We managed to pass this milestone. You have to be proud to have arrived in the final and be disappointed because you did not win,” Marquinhos said.
“We must continue on this path, in sacrifice, in this complicity. We must continue in this solidarity in the field as we have done since the start of the season. Now is the time to get back to our habits in Paris, think about the next season, see what we can do better.”
The capital club defender then touched on the missed opportunities that the squad squandered throughout the 90 minutes.
“Marquinhos also returned to the content of this final. “It was a final. There is a lot of tension. They played with their guns, so did we. It’s a team that has possession,” Marquinhos said. “We did not succeed in realizing our opportunities. In a final, we don’t have many chances, and we have to make them happen. The Bayern team do not know how to create a lot of opportunity. They had control, but not many chances, but they scored the goal.”
Finally, Marquinhos took the role of captain and stated that although Neymar Jr. and Kylian Mbappé didn’t have a good match, the fault of the result isn’t all their shoulders.
“We must not blame everything on Neymar and Mbappé. We are a team. We know that everyone has tried to do their best. Everyone will come home and see what can be done better,” Marquinhos said. “It’s difficult because each time we say that we must not have regret and give everything. This is what we tried to do, but everyone can do a little better, but it is not the fault of our attackers. We are a team. Everyone has responsibilities.”
