After weeks of rumors and speculation, S.L. Benfica has decided to reverse course and end its pursuit of former Paris Saint-Germain forward and current free agent Edinson Cavani, according to the Portuguese-based outlet A Bola TV.
The report states that Benfica has opted to no longer push to sign Cavani because the club does not aspire to meet the financial implications of such a deal. While Benfica would not have to post a transfer fee to acquire Cavani, it would have to meet the demands from Cavani’s camp of a three-year deal, €30 million net agreement.
Sky Sport’s Fabrizio Romano reported yesterday that a three-year contract was offered, and there was a “good chance” that an agreement would be reached between the two sides next week. However, this will not be the case anymore due to financial reasons.
Benfica will now look elsewhere for forward reinforcements, while Cavani continues his search for a new club.
