‘We’ve Certainly Thought About him’ — Leeds Owner On Possibly Signing Cavani

The suitors for free agent Edinson Cavani continue to emerge out of the blue as of late. However, they are surely not the teams that he had hoped would show initial interest. He is reportedly eyeing a move to a contending team in Europe’s top five leagues. So far, Major League Soccer’s Inter Miami and Primeira Liga’s Benfica have been the two showing the most interest.

But now there is a new team that is showing relative intrigue for Cavani: Leeds United. The English-based club recently secured a promotion to the Premier League and is vying for a big splash signing. Cavani would certainly fit the bill in this. In speaking to Sky Sport Italia (via Football Italia), Leeds United majority owner Andrea Radrizzani spoke about current free agent Cavani and what a player like him would bring to the club.

“In addition to his quality, Cavani could contribute with his physicality and adapt here, but I’ve never talked about him with the coach,” Radrizzani said.

Such a move would be unexpected, but club owner Radrizzani has put some thought into it.

“Having said that, we’ve certainly thought about him and we’ll see, given he’s still available on a free transfer,” Radrizzani said.

If Leeds wishes to sign Cavani, it not only has to convince the Uruguayan to buy into the team’s project but also offer a significant contract for his services. El Matador has reportedly been aspiring to sign a €12 million yearly salary contract. Leeds could be in the market for him, considering that its recent promotion to England’s top flight will likely net them more than £100 million.

So far, Leeds and representatives from the Uruguayan have not had any serious negotiations.
