Mauro Icardi Discusses His Teammates, the Bond in the PSG Clubhouse, and Succeeding Cavani

Mauro Icardi sat down recently with Paris Saint-Germain’s media team to explain why he chose to stay with the club following his loan from Inter Milan. Now, the 27-year-old striker has given a more in-depth interview with Le Parisien where the French media outlet asked him about a variety of topics.

One question that was asked was over the partnership that Icardi has with the creators on the squad. He explains how Angel Di Maria, Kylian Mbappé, and Neymar Jr. helped him integrate into the team.

“Very well. From my first training in Paris, from our first steps together, we had a good feeling. I knew Angel, of course. But not Neymar, nor Mbappé,” Icardi said. “From the first minute, they helped me integrate into the team to get used to the little habits of the group. It helped me a lot.”

The next topic up for discussion was about the bond the squad has with each other. Recently, the team came together to celebrate Leandro Paredes’ 26th birthday, and the pictures displayed how close they all are.

“I believe that sharing many moments on a daily basis, having a good atmosphere in the locker room is the most important. It works on the ground, but also outside,” Icardi said “As soon as there is a birthday, a meal … The whole team is there. This is what makes our group strong.”

Finally, there was a question about being the successor of Edinson Cavani. PSG’s all-time leading goal scorer decided not to extend his contract for another two months and his time with the club ended on June 30.

As a result, the 33-year-old chose to focus on his next venture. It’s left Icardi to assume the domestic cup finals’ striker duties and the remainder of the UEFA Champions League competition.

“I did not come in the shoes of a replacement or that of a holder. For me, there is neither one nor the other. I am in Paris to give the best and help the team to win,” Icardi said. “When this role of holder comes back to me, I give what I can. When it was Edi’s turn, he did the same. Only that matters. Nothing is easy in building a group. But the atmosphere is created with this type of professional attitude. We all have to be exemplary.”
