Former PSG Defender Says Silva Should Remain Captain For Remainder of This Season

Thiago Silva is set to leave Paris Saint-Germain at the conclusion of the team’s UEFA Champions League run next month. After eight seasons with the club, it will truly be the end of an era.

PSG may very well end up bringing backline reinforcements for depth. But that is not the only major decision that it will make. PSG manager Thomas Tuchel will look to select the team’s next captain. But according to a question posed by Le Parisien, could the manager choose the next captain before the team’s upcoming cup finals and embark on a new era?

One former club legend does not think this would be a wise move.

Jean-Marc Pilorget spent 14 years with PSG and is the all-time leader in club appearances with 435. As a veteran and captain of the team for a good part of his time with PSG, he can relate to the leadership responsibilities that Silva has had to hold on for his time as the team captain. Speaking to Le Parisien, he feels that Silva should continue to carry the captain’s armband until his final game with the team.

“If we want to pay tribute to Thiago Silva, which would be legitimate, we’ll leave the armband to him,” Pilorget said.

As mentioned, the team has a decision to make soon on who will step up to be the next captain. Pilorget suggests that current fourth captain Kylian Mbappe should be the next one in line.

“Without knowing what might happen in one or two years, I wouldn’t have any problem giving it to Kylian Mbappe,” Pilorget said. “We can already see everything he stands for today, but also from Monaco and still in the French team. If I were coach, I’d appoint him direct captain.”

For now, this topic of discussion is not a talking point for the team at all. PSG is hoping that they can send Silva off with three more trophy celebrations.
