Grading PSG: The Return of King-Pembe

Now that the 2019-20 Ligue 1 season is over, it’s time to hand out some grades to the Paris Saint-Germain players for their performance in the French top flight.

Note: In order to be graded, each player needed to have appeared in at least five Ligue 1 matches this season.

Presnel Kimpembe

Intro: Coming off an injury-riddled 2018-19 season, Presnel Kimpembe bounced back in a big way in 2019-20 despite a couple of nagging injuries that robbed him once again of time with the first team.

With Marquinhos playing more as a defensive midfielder in Thomas Tuchel’s system, Kimpembe was the first-choice defender to replace the Brazilian at center-back.

From what we saw in Ligue 1 and in the UEFA Champions League, where Kimpembe completely silenced Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland, the Frenchman appears ready to step into a leadership role with the French champions.

Stats:

16 Appearances
65.9 Accurate Passes per Game
1.4 Aerial Duels Won per Game
3.9 Ground Duels Won per Game
1.3 Interceptions per Game
2.1 Tackles per Game
6 Yellow cards

Final Grade: B

Outlook: Kimpembe came up through the PSG academy so he is extremely loyal to the club. He wants to win the biggest trophies with the club and he feels a burning desire to do so. That is not something you can always find in the transfer market.

At 24-years-old, his best football is ahead of him and I’m confident we’ll see him flourish during his current contract, which runs until June of 2023.
