After reading Mundo Deportivo‘s report about how FC Barcelona would expect Neymar Jr. to take a massive pay cut if he wants to return to the club he left in 2017, I imagined his response going something like this:
According to the Spanish publication, when you add Neymar’s salary and sponsorship deal with the National Bank of Qatar, the Brazil international earns just over €50 million per year at PSG. Barcelona can only offer their former player €20 million per season.
Essentially, MD paints this sob story of Neymar needing to choose between money (PSG) and happiness (Barcelona). What they don’t realize is that Neymar is happy at PSG, he’s getting paid, and he’s led his team to the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League.
In order to silence the transfer rumors, PSG reportedly offered Neymar a lucrative contract extension worth €38 million per year, which is slightly more than what he earns now and remember, that’s without the National Bank of Qatar sponsorship.
Neymar hasn’t signed yet and is likely going to wait until the end of the season to assess the season and make a decision on his future. However, knowing that Barcelona will offer him €30 million less per year might make signing an extension to stay in the French capital much easier.
