A few days ago, Thiago Silva expressed his desire to stay in Paris to Football France. The Brazilian’s contract expires in June, and although he’d like to continue his career with Paris Saint-Germain, no contract talks have taken place; until now.

In a recent interview with TuttoMercatoWeb (via CulturePSG), Silva’s agent, Paulo Tonietto, went on to say, “We are absolutely not worried. Thiago is very good in Paris. He plays in a big club, he is happy. We have to talk to the club; we will do it in January.”

Furthermore, Toneitto goes on to say that because there are no talks of an extension at the moment, that he doesn’t know what will happen. Despite no negotiations between both parties, having a set month to meet sporting director Leonardo is an encouraging sign. Although money doesn’t seem like it will be a hurdle, the number of years on the contract might.

PSG have already made their decision on another club legend, Edinson Cavani will likely move on after this season. At 35-years-old Silva is still playing at a world-class level, but like any athlete in their mid-30s, the decline can come quickly. However, the situations are a little different.

In Cavani’s case, the capital club brought in another world-class striker in Mauro Icardi to replace the Uruguayan. Meanwhile, although PSG did bring in Abdou Diallo, so far, the Frenchman doesn’t seem like an adequate replacement. Also, the squad still misses Silva’s play when he’s out of the lineup as evident in the loss to Dijon FCO.

Being 35-years-old isn’t a significant issue for Thomas Tuchel who spoke about Silva at his pre-match press conference ahead of Friday’s match against Lille OSC. The German manager goes into detail when talking about the Parisian captain saying, “For me, age is a subject. But this is not the most important. What matters most is what happens every day, and in the field.”

Also, Tuchel went on to say that he’s not ready to think of life at PSG without Thiago Silva. It shows that although he’s up there in age, he remains a significant piece to the club’s UEFA Champions League hopes.

The combination of still playing at an elite level, being the captain, and wanting to stay, makes sense for both sides to hammer out an extension; despite O Monstro‘s age. By extending Silva for at least a season, it buys Leonardo sometime to find a suitable replacement. PSG doesn’t need to get into bidding wars and overpay for one position.

Silva was adamant in wanting to finish his career in Paris, and unless a significant hurdle pops up, it looks as though he might get his wish.
