No, PSG Did Not Attempt to Extend Neymar’s Contract

Even when he’s out injured, Neymar Jr. makes headlines.

Earlier this month, the often ill-informed Spanish outlet Don Balon reported that there are signs that Neymar could remain in the French capital and sign an extension.

However, according to Le Parisien, there are reasons for the capital club to think twice about negotiating a new contract for their Brazilian star and in fact, negotiations between the two sides are at a standstill.

After a tumultuous summer, it’s probably a good thing that both Neymar and PSG take a step back and evaluate their position and what they really want next summer.

As I mentioned earlier, Neymar is our of action due to a hamstring strain and that’s coming off of several other injuries that have cost him playing time (Transfermarkt). Whether you’re a club interested in making a big offer for Neymar or you’re PSG wanting to extend his contract, you have to understand it’s a calculated risk and one that may not work out. As was recently reported, Neymar has missed as many games for PSG as he’s played. That’s not a great return on investment.

Not only does PSG have to worry about paying a lot of money to a player who’s injured often, but they also have Kylian Mbappé in their squad whose contract is up in 2022 (the same as Neymar) and he likely wants to be the unquestioned leader of PSG and paid like it as well. Paris may not be big enough for both of them.
