PSG 2-2 Rennes: Match Review

The first game of the Ligue 1 season is in the books for PSG – they only managed a draw with Rennes, and even that required coming back from 2-0 down after half time.

It’s no surprise, really. The team have been slow starters in general in recent years, and the fact that they had so many players going deep at the World Cup was only going to enhance that effect this year. It wouldn’t be surprising to see them drop a few points in the early weeks, before they really get into gear. They remain massive favourites to retain the league despite a disappointing result at the weekend.

Of course, you won’t make much money betting on PSG to win Ligue 1. Their odds are so short it’s almost not worth the risk of betting. You could bet on the Parisians’ margin of victory in the league, for example. Do you reckon they will blow the competition away this season? Or will someone run them close, like last year? Or you could take a look at the Champions League. PSG are favourites there are after winning two in a row. But their odds are a lot longer than they are in the league. Then there are individual awards – the failures of France, England and Argentina at the World Cup has opened the door for PSG star Kvicha Kvaratskhelia to win the Ballon d’Or. Just last week Toni Kroos was backing him as the outstanding candidate for his club efforts alone.

Kvara’s Georgia weren’t at the World Cup, so he had no chance to improve his standing there. But given winners Spain put in such a collective effort, the winger’s chances of winning the award for club performances alone have improved.

So while betting on the star-studded double European Champions to win Ligue 1 won’t be much fun, there are plenty of other options to have an interesting wager this season.
