PSG being second in Ligue 1 in December will be a failure in their eyes. They are only one point behind league leaders Lens, but pressure will be on manager Luis Enrique to make PSG dominant in Ligue 1 again, and the owners could massively help him out if they bolstered their attack in the January transfer window.
PSG are typically the league’s top scorers. Last campaign, they managed 92 goals, an average of 2.71 goals a game, and 18 more than Marseille.
This season has not followed the same script, with Enrique’s side managing 35 goals, which is down to just 2.19 per match.
The club is still the big favorite to win their domestic league, with MyBettingSites comparing the best betting sites to tell us they’re given an 89% chance. However, strong performances in Europe recently have not always been backed up by wins when returning to their bread and butter.
The statistics tell the story, as midfielder Vitinha is their top scorer in the Champions League with four goals.
Another midfielder, Joao Neves, is the joint top goal scorer for the club in Ligue 1 alongside Bradley Barcola, and they’ve only managed five goals each.
Meanwhile, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia only has three goals, whilst Desire Doue has two. Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembele only has two goals as well, but he has been in and out of the team this season due to injury.
The strength in attack is there in terms of the manager having plenty of players to choose from, but this season, they haven’t stood up as much as they have needed to.
It would therefore be a good idea for PSG to strengthen their attack in January in order to get them back to being a lethal attack again.
There’s definitely some room for them to do so as well, especially if they were able to shift some of the fringe players who were linked with moves away last summer.
Lee Kang-in is one such player. He only has one goal in Ligue 1 this season and was linked with a move to the Premier League last summer. Being able to shift the 24-year-old would free up some wages and budget to help them sign a more consistent goalscorer.
It’s not always easy to sign world-class talent mid-way through the season, and the likes of Michael Olise, who has been linked to PSG in the past, now feel impossible to get. However, there are definitely some top options available who would move to the French giants in a heartbeat.
Crystal Palace’s Jean-Philippe Mateta, who is struggling to agree terms on a new contract, has already emphasised his desire to move to a big club playing in the Champions League.
He could be available for a price that PSG would match, especially with his contract expiring in 2027.
Mateta managed 14 goals in the Premier League last season and has a further 7 in 16 appearances this campaign. He has been in the last two French squads and would no doubt thrive with top creative players around him.
Meanwhile, exciting prospect Said El Mala has been linked with a move to the Ligue 1 giants. The 19-year-old winger looks like a top talent and has six goals and three assists in 14 Bundesliga appearances this season.
PSG have only scored more than one goal in two of their last five league games, and three of these games have been draws.
Bringing in a fresh creative spark would no doubt help rejuvenate the PSG attack, as they bid to start scoring more goals and reestablish their dominance in the division.
