PSG 2025/26: Super Cup, Transfer Window & Season Expectations

Paris Saint-Germain started the 2025/26 season on a positive note by defeating Tottenham Hotspur after a penalty shoot-out to clinch the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday.

Luis Enrique’s star-studded side will switch their attention to Ligue 1 when they kick off their title defence at Nantes this weekend.

PSG are overwhelming favourites with Hollywoodbets to continue their domestic dominance, and it would be a brave move to back against them.

The French giants have been reshaping their squad during the summer transfer window, completing several high-profile incoming transfers.

Read on as we look at PSG’s transfer business, before assessing what the club can achieve during the 2025/25 campaign.

Paris St-Germain have strengthened their defensive options this summer by signing Bournemouth defender Illia Zabarnyi.

However, their standout transfer business is in the goalkeeping department, with Enrique deciding to move on from Gianluigi Donnarumma.

PSG have signed Lucas Chevalier from Lille, while Renato Martin has arrived from Roma. The PSG manager has told Chevalier he will be number one.

Donnarumma was subsequently omitted from PSG’s squad for the Super Cup tie against Tottenham, a move which triggered an emotional social media post by the goalkeeper.

Enrique has confirmed it was solely his decision to freeze out the Italian international, who now looks set to join one of the big guns in the Premier League.

“Donnarumma is out of the squad as it’s my own decision – I am one hundred percent responsible,” Enrique said (h/t TNT Sports).

“These are always difficult decisions, I know that. I can only speak very well of Gigio Donnarumma, he is one of the best players in his role, no doubt.

“He is an even better person, but we are looking for a different kind of goalkeeper. It is always difficult to manage these kinds of situations.”

PSG 2025/26 – Season Expectations

While it is difficult to question a manager who guided PSG to their first Champions League title last season, his decision to ditch Donnarumma could come back to haunt him.

Donnarumma has won four Ligue 1 titles during his time with PSG, and played a key role in helping the club break their duck in UEFA’s top club competition last term. And for a team looking to repeat the feat this season, it’s tricky to change their starting goalkeeper or mess too much with the formula in general.

Chevalier has been likened to an outfield player because of the quality of his touch, vision, and ability to break lines with his passing ability from the back.

For a team that generally dominates possession, he should be an extremely useful asset. However, replacing Donnarumma places added pressure on his shoulders.

Chevalier was named Ligue 1’s best goalkeeper last term, keeping 11 clean sheets as his side finished fifth. He should better that tally this season.

The 23-year-old produced a mixed performance against Tottenham, although his save from Micky van de Ven in the shoot-out ultimately proved to be decisive.

Chevalier is unlikely to be troubled in domestic competitions, where PSG traditionally dominate their rivals without breaking sweat.

The acid test will come in the Champions League. Chevalier’s role in every goal PSG will be analysed and comparisons drawn with his predecessor.

Anything less than retaining the European title will be viewed as a failure for PSG, which adds a new layer of intrigue for a club that loves a bit of drama.
