Paris Saint-Germain

Where Should PSG Strengthen in Summer Transfer Window

Paris Saint-Germain is coming off their first UEFA Champions League win in club history, in which they were one of the youngest teams in recent memory. You wouldn’t think there would be a lot that needs to be changed in the squad, but in order to defend their title, they’ll need to strengthen in key areas.

Luis Enrique, PSG’s manager, and Luis Campos, PSG’s football advisor, have done a great job assembling a Champions League-winning side. Almost as good as freetips.com‘s football tips. That said, there will be some players leaving, some question marks regarding depth, and improvements to the starting lineup that will need to be addressed.

First, the future of Gianluigi Donnarumma must be decided. The Italy international is coming up on the final year of his contract, and while PSG would love to keep the goalkeeper who propelled them to the Champions League win, he may want to leave for a new challenge. If PSG cannot get a clear answer regarding his future, PSG will have no choice but to look for a starting goalkeeper.

Then comes Marquinhos. PSG’s captain finally achieved what he has been working toward for over a decade. However, he’s on the wrong side of 30 and has stumbled at times this season. I would very much like Marquinhos to stay in the team, but PSG must sign a quality starting center-back to take the majority of minutes. Marquinhos would be an excellent backup and a player to help mentor the young defensive core PSG now has.

Finally, Achraf Hakimi could arguably be considered one of PSG’s best players this season. He is one of the best right-backs in the world and his ability to defend and get forward and score goals is a rare attribute. That said, Hakimi play a lot of minutes this season and in order to preserve his stamina, PSG absolutely has to sign a quality right-back who can provide cover for the upcoming season. Nordi Mukiele will return from loan, but considering Luis Enrique doesn’t rate him, PSG will have to go out in the market and find an up-and-coming right-back that they can develop.

With those three positions addressed, PSG should be considered favorites to win the Champions League next season. Désiré Doué, Vitinha, João Neves, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Willian Pach, and Nuno Mendes will only continue to get better. The mix of technical quality and speed is something not many clubs possess, and now they have Champions League pedigree. The future is bright in the French capital.
