Liverpool have been in great form this season but had the weekend off, meaning they’ll head into their first-leg matchup against Paris Saint-Germain at the Parc des Princes either well-rested or potentially a bit rusty.

Before turning their attention to the Champions League, Liverpool played one final Premier League match midweek, defeating Newcastle United 2-0 at Anfield on Wednesday. They’ll carry that positive momentum into Paris.

PSG, meanwhile, also performed impressively, beating LOSC Lille 4-1, with all four goals coming in the first half.

In his column for Sky Sports, Paul Merson said Liverpool can’t afford to lose the first leg at the Parc des Princes. Moreover, he pointed out that Luis Enrique’s side are riding confidence but suggested that the Reds would have the advantage if they manage to get a positive result on Wednesday.

“I don’t see Liverpool winning at Paris Saint-Germain – they have to come back with at least a draw. This is a game where either one of these two teams could finish the tie in 45 minutes if the other one has an off day. That’s why this is a good cup tie. Both sides can absolutely rip you apart.

“We saw that with PSG in the Man City game, with four goals in the second half, and we’ve seen Liverpool destroy teams. I don’t think there’ll be a lot in this. PSG are a team now. They haven’t got loads of superstars anymore.

They’ve gone in a different direction and it’s worked. With all those players they used to have, they never looked like winning the Champions League. PSG can’t afford to lose the first leg because the second leg, with the atmosphere at Anfield, is a different game.”

With their win over Lille, PSG are now unbeaten in 22 matches across all competitions. This impressive streak highlights the team’s strong collective performance and rise to the top of Europe. The real challenge awaits on Wednesday with a crucial showdown against Liverpool.
