PSG Take On Underdog Role in Champions League

It wasn’t that long ago that many expected Paris Saint-Germain to win the UEFA Champions League. They had Neymar Jr., Lionel Messi, and Kylian Mbappé leading the attack as well as a star-studded supporting cast. As we know now, PSG never got close to a Champions League final with those players.

The 2024-25 season is the first without any of the big three wearing the PSG kit. You could call it a rebuild with young players such as Bradley Barcola, Désiré Doué, Kang-In Lee, and Gonçalo Ramos making up PSG’s attack. They may not be household names just yet, but that’s what makes this PSG team an underdog in the Champions League. Once you learn the types of betting and their meaning, you’ll see that PSG is not anywhere close to being favored to win the tournament.

There is still work to be done. PSG hasn’t qualified for the knockout stage yet and will need a result against Stuttgart to secure their place. It’s a difficult fixture, but one PSG should see through following their stunning 4-2 come-from-behind win over Manchester City at the Parc des Princes. The young squad is full of confidence, and they should go to Stuttgart in the best form they’ve been in all season.

Should PSG beat Stuttgart and qualify for the next round, there’s not a single team that will want to face Luis Enrique’s squad. You could argue PSG is the most dangerous of the potential unseeded teams in the knockout stage because of the speed and technical ability they have at every position. PSG also have a not-so-secret weapon they can deploy in the knockout stage they should terrify potential opponents.

PSG broke a club record for January transfers by signing Khvicha Kvaratskhelia from Napoli. The left-winger is one of the brightest stars in the game, and every top club was after his signature, including Chelsea FC and Liverpool FC. However, PSG sold him on their sporting project, and the deal was made. Due to the Champions League rules, Kvaratskhelia can’t be registered for the match against Stuttgart, but for the knockout stage, the Georgia international will be registered and will likely play meaningful minutes for his new club.

PSG has a young, talented squad and just added a major piece to their attack. Regardless of the opponent, that’s a lethal combination, and every club left in the Champions League will be hoping that they are not drawn against the reigning French champions.
