How PSG Could Take Advantage of Barcelona’s Financial Situation

The January transfer window is officially open, and clubs around Europe are looking to improve their squads ahead of the second half of the 2024-25 season. For FC Barcelona, that could prove difficult, considering they’re having trouble registering a player they signed last August.

Dani Olmo joined Barcelona from RB Leipzig for a transfer fee of €60 million, and they were able to register him temporarily. However, due to La Liga’s financial fair play regulations, Olmo won’t be able to play for the Catalan club until after the summer. Much like nicotine users use Velo nicotine pouches as an alternative, Barcelona will have to find alternative revenue streams if they hope to have Olmo this season.

Whether Barcelona has one of their best players or not isn’t really Paris Saint-Germain’s concern, but, the reigning French champions could take advantage of the situation by attempting to sign some of their talented players that Barcelona wouldn’t consider parting with if not for their financial issues.

Jules Kounde is at the top of the list of Barcelona transfer targets PSG should attempt to sign. The versatile defender could slot into PSG’s starting lineup immediately, and he was born in Paris. At 26 years old, he fits everything PSG would be looking for in a potential transfer. The France international’s contract expires in 2027, so now is when Barcelona could maximize his transfer value. If they feel they have a young, up-and-coming defender in their academy, they may entertain an offer from PSG, especially an attractive one.

Another transfer target PSG may consider is Alejandro Balde. The 21-year-old defender came up through the famed Barcelona academy and has recorded four assists in 22 appearances this season. Balde’s preferred position is left-back, which PSG may be targeting given the recent news that Nuno Mendes may want to leave the French capital. PSG still has Lucas Hernández at left-back, but considering his age and numerous knee injuries, Les Parisiens would be wise to sign a young, up-and-coming left-back to eventually replace the Frenchman in the starting lineup.

Barcelona will keep trying to find revenue streams and move money around to satisfy FFP, but if it comes down to them needing to sell players, PSG should be first in line to make an offer. The squad has just a couple of holes that could easily be filled with players in a very talented Barcelona squad. If they can solidify the defense, PSG could very well be contenders for the UEFA Champions League.
