Last week, the DNCG (Direction Nationale du Contrôle de Gestion) handed Olympique Lyonnais a significant sanction, putting the club under immense pressure.
Lyon now faces the looming threat of relegation to Ligue 2 unless it can make major financial improvements. This could force the club to offload key players, such as Rayan Cherki or Malick Fofana, at reduced prices during the winter transfer window.
Cherki, who extended his contract with Lyon for two more years in September, offers the club some leverage in potential negotiations. However, L’Équipe reports that he could leave this winter.
While his ultimate ambition is to play for Real Madrid, Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain are also closely monitoring his situation.
How much could Rayan Cherki cost?
According to Foot Mercato, the France Under-21 international is valued at €30 million to €35 million (£25 million to £29.2 million), with Liverpool currently just keeping an eye on Cherki.
Liverpool aren’t alone in their interest, though, as PSG, Newcastle United, and Bayer Leverkusen are also reportedly tracking the talented youngster.
Recently, the Daily Mail reported that Liverpool are considering Cherki as a potential replacement for Mohamed Salah, with Lyon reportedly looking to sell to address their financial struggles.
