This month, Olympique Lyonnais faced a significant financial sanction from the DNCG (Direction Nationale du Contrôle de Gestion), putting the club under considerable financial strain. Nonetheless, don’t expect a fire sale come the January window.

OL need to sell players due to this ruling but are holding out for what they consider fair prices. With the looming threat of relegation to Ligue 2, Lyon must resolve its financial troubles to avoid this outcome.

This could mean parting with key players like Rayan Cherki and Malick Fofana, possibly at a lower price than they’re worth in the winter transfer window.

Cherki, who signed a two-year extension in September, provides Lyon with some bargaining power. However, L’Équipe reports that a January move remains highly likely.

Although Cherki has long dreamed of joining Real Madrid, Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain are also monitoring his situation closely.

If either Liverpool or PSG wanted to secure Cherki in the winter transfer window, OL manager Pierre Sage put cold water on the player leaving midway through the 2024-25 season.

“Are [Cherki and Malick Fofana] going to stay this winter? I think so,” Sage said (h/t Le10Sport). “Am I sure? I’m sure I think so. (laughs)”

Recently, TBR Football reported that Liverpool’s £17 million bid for the 21-year-old is expected to be rejected, with Lyon holding out for £29 million. Unless the French side are overwhelmed with an offer, Cherki appears to be staying.
