Could PSG’s Big-Spending Strategy Return?

Since the arrival of manager Luis Enrique in 2023, Paris Saint-Germain has undergone a transition to its sporting project that few would have predicted. For years, the Qatar Sports Investments-owned club invested heavily in star players with global recognition. Under Luis Enrique, the stars have left the French capital.

From Lionel Messi to Neymar Jr. to Kylian Mbappé, superstar players have left PSG and have been replaced by the likes of Vitinha, Bradley Barcola, and Ousmane Dembélé. The clear strategy is to focus on younger players who want to be at PSG and will fight for the badge. Messi never wanted to come to PSG, Mbappé was always looking for his next club, and Neymar was never healthy enough to make a difference. A change was needed, and that’s exactly what Luis Enrique brought.

Champions League Let-Down

This season, PSG has not looked good in the revamped UEFA Champions League. Mid-way through the league phase, PSG defeated Girona FC, lost to Arsenal FC, drew against PSV Eindhoven, and lost in stoppage time to Atletico Madrid. While it’s great to focus on younger players and develop them, PSG is a big club that cannot go out early in the biggest competition in club football.

Superstar Players PSG Could Sign

The issue for PSG in the Champions League has been scoring goals. The squad is creating plenty of chances, but PSG simply can’t score. The ankle injury to Gonçalo Ramos has played a huge role, and while he is expected to return after the international break, PSG may need to look for a proven striker in January to boost its chances.

Victor Osimhen was a player linked with a move to PSG before he ultimately signed with Galatasaray. Could PSG renew its interest in the Nigeria international to help boost their goal-scoring? Another striker who has been lighting up the Champions League is Viktor Gyökeres of Sporting. Every top club will be after his signature, and the transfer fee won’t be cheap, but he would instantly improve PSG’s attack.

My preferred pick would be RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Šeško. The German club will likely not advance to the league phase of the Champions League, and with Xavi Simons on loan, perhaps an agreement between the two clubs could be reached where Šeško makes the move to PSG and Simons is transferred permanently to Leipzig.

Time For Casino-Style Spending For PSG? Is It a Good Time to Feel Confident About PSG?

Luis Campos, PSG’s sporting director, has a lot of choices he can make thanks to the great financial advantage that PSG have to improve the squad.
