Paris Saint-Germain was one of several clubs eyeing Athletic Club’s standout player, Nico Williams. However, after winning UEFA Euro 2024, Williams opted to remain with Athletic, rejecting offers to move elsewhere.
During the summer transfer window, Williams attracted interest from top clubs, including Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Spurs, Barcelona, and PSG.
Williams had an impressive 2023-24 season, featuring in 37 matches across all competitions for Athletic Club. He also played a key role in Spain’s UEFA Euro 2024 triumph in Germany, which unsurprisingly drew the attention of several clubs.
Nonetheless, there’s a reason why Williams decided to remain with the La Liga side over making a high-profile move this summer, even after his stock hit an all-time high after Spain won the Euros.
According to SPORT (h/t Le10Sport), Nico Williams had assured Athletic Bilbao that he would stay for another year to play in European competition.
Despite knowing of interest from PSG and FC Barcelona, the Spanish international chose to remain with his childhood club and delay any potential transfer until the summer of 2025 at the earliest.
Moreover, El Chiringuito speculated that Williams made it clear that this season is likely to be his last with Athletic Club, saying, “I’m staying for one more year” instead of just “I’m staying.”
