PSG’s Needs in the January Transfer Window

The 2024-25 season is underway, and Paris Saint-Germain looks impressive. They’ve won their opening four Ligue 1 games in impressive fashion, and they won their first UEFA Champions League match against Girona FC at the Parc des Princes. As good as things are right now, the squad’s cracks are beginning to show.

The most glaring issue at PSG that Luis Enrique will want to address in the January transfer window is on defense. PSG has a quality starting back four, but they really need depth at several positions to continue winning. The odds on whether PSG will go back in the market for more defenders in January are not yet known, but when they are, it will be useful to see if you can find a Mr Green bonus before any bets are placed. If a quality back-up right-back were available in January, I imagine PSG would explore options to sign them to give Achraf Hakimi a break.

The next issue at PSG is with the striker position. Marco Asensio went down against Girona and had to be subbed off. Gonçalo Ramos will be out until November due to an ankle injury. Randal Kolo Muani is poised to see plenty of game time in their absence, but he hasn’t shown the ability to step up in the big moments and score goals when PSG needs them most. Last summer, Victor Osimhen was rumored to be a transfer target, but that never materialized. There are very few prolific goal-scorers in the game today, and it’s even more unlikely that they will be available in January, so this is a position that PSG will want to address, but they will likely not be able to unless they get creative. Could they include Kolo Muani in a transfer for a player to facilitate a transfer? Could they look to unsettled players at Real Madrid who are looking for more playing time? PSG will explore all options if the goals aren’t coming.

The midfield is solid with the addition of João Neves to Warren Zaïre-Emery and Vitinha, but if there’s one improvement Luis Enrique may be looking to add it’s height. All three midfielders are shorter in stature, which could present a problem later in the Champions League when PSG runs into a more physical midfield that can win possession via headers. If there is a quality midfielder available who brings height and physicality to the midfield, I expect PSG to make a move.

If PSG can address these three levels of its squad, a return trip to the Champions League semi-finals isn’t out of the realm of possibility, and who knows, maybe they’ll face Real Madrid and Kylian Mbappé in the final.
