During Kylian Mbappé’s time at Paris Saint-Germain, he was frequently linked to Real Madrid, but Liverpool was another club that occasionally surfaced in connection to the French star.

Since Mbappé speaks and understands English, a move to Liverpool wouldn’t have been an issue for him. In fact, a new report sheds light on just how close the 2018 World Cup winner came to joining the Premier League side instead of heading to Spain.

According to L’Équipe, in 2022, Mbappé was seriously considering a move to Liverpool. He had grown frustrated with PSG’s project and responded positively to an offer from the English club.

Liverpool proposed a substantial €200 million deal, coupled with a short-term contract that would have allowed Mbappé to join Real Madrid later. However, PSG’s then-sporting director, Antero Henrique, firmly rejected the offer.

CBS Sports’ Jonathan Johnson touched on the matter, and although hindsight is 20/20, the French football expert stated that a move to Liverpool or a Premier League side would have been the best-case scenario for PSG because they’d receive a transfer fee.

“Would he have been a good fit there? It would have been really interesting to see,” Johnson said on the latest episode of PSG Talking. “It would have been interesting to see how Jürgen Klopp would have handled Liverpool going out and spending that money.

“I do think in terms of PSG bringing in a fee for Mbappé, a Premier League club coming in for him was always going to be the best case scenario in terms of extracting the fee. But there was always going to be that battle with Mbappé over the fact that he wanted to go to Real Madrid.”
