Could Real Madrid be abandoning their pursuit of Paris Saint-Germain defender Achraf Hakimi? The Spanish side could be agreeing to a new contract with a veteran player as a short-term solution.

In June, The Athletic’s Mario Cortegana stated that Real Madrid view Hakimi as the long-term replacement for Dani Carvajal, whose contract expires after this season.

The Morocco international’s current deal expires in 2026, but the Parisians want to keep the player past that year. In July, RMC Sport’s Fabrice Hawkins reported that Hakimi is set to extend his contract with PSG, keeping him at the club beyond 2026.

Should Hakimi extend his deal in the French capital, it throws a wrench into the Spanish club’s plans. As a result, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano stated in his Daily Briefing column for Caught Offside that talks to extend Carvajal’s contract will take place because of positive feelings on all sides.

An extension for the six-time UEFA Champions League winner will allow Los Blancos more time to discuss a return to Real Madrid with Hakimi’s camp or develop other alternatives that could eventually replace Carvajal.

It will be interesting to see what route the La Liga side takes, but if they want to battle for Hakimi, the Parisians need to prepare themselves for another saga.
