FC Barcelona received €222 million when Paris Saint-Germain paid the release clause of Neymar Jr. in 2017. The Catalan side used some of that money to land Ousmane Dembélé from Borussia Dortmund.

Barcelona brought in Dembélé during the summer of 2017 when the talented French winger was just 20 years old. The initial transfer fee was €105 million, with up to an additional €40 million in potential add-ons.

Some of these bonus payments were straightforward to achieve. For example, Barcelona had to pay €5 million each time they qualified for the Champions League, which happened twice during Dembélé’s time at the club.

Additionally, Dortmund was entitled to €5 million each time Dembélé made 25 appearances for Barcelona, which led to several payments. Now, SPORT BILD reports that the total cost of this transfer was €148 million and the Spanish side didn’t come close to receiving that sum for his departure to PSG.

The Parisians paid €50.4 million for the player last year, so Barcelona must accept this financial loss. Now, over a year after Dembélé left the club, Barcelona has settled all the remaining debts owed to Dortmund. The long saga of this costly transfer has finally come to a close.
