Chelsea, PSG Suffer Setback as Benfica Stand Firm, Keep Youngster Under Contract Until 2028

Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain appear to be eyeing the same SL Benfica player to bolster their backline before the summer transfer window closes on Friday night.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reported on Wednesday that Chelsea are eyeing Tomás Araújo as a potential target if a defender leaves in the final days of the transfer window. Although they haven’t made a formal bid yet, the club highly values Araújo.

On a related note, L’Equipe’s Loïc Tanzi says PSG have offered Araújo a contract worth €5 million per year, but they’re holding off until they sell a center-back.

While these two teams are keen on the 22-year-old defender, Benfica have no desire to offload him. Romano reported the latest on this file noting that the Portuguese giants want to keep Araújo at their club; they’ve already sold enough players for this summer.

Araújo is under contract with Benfica until 2028 and has made 27 appearances with the first team across all competitions. He has also scored one goal in his brief time with the senior squad.
