Athletic Club’s Nico Williams is on the radar of several top European clubs this summer to bolster their attack. Moreover, his profile rose after his impressive performance at UEFA Euro 2024, where he played a crucial role in Spain winning the trophy.
Last month, CaughtOffside reported that Williams has caught the eye of several top clubs. Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Tottenham, Barcelona, and Paris Saint-Germain are all interested.
In addition, Mario Cortegana from The Athletic mentioned that PSG has already started looking into the possibility of making a deal. Despite all this interest that Williams is receiving, Athletic Club teammate Óscar de Marcos believes it’s in the 22-year-old’s best interest to stay.
“My opinion is that the best thing for Nico is to stay at Athletic,” de Marcos said (h/t Mundo Deportivo). “Because he is 22 years old, because the coach he has has gotten an incredible performance out of him, and because he will have another year there. It seems that when they want you, you have to go. Not everything that glitters is gold.”
Barcelona currently lacks liquidity, so it is looking for ways to raise €58 million to pay the release clause. Cadena SER reported that Barcelona might seek another loan to pay the forward’s release clause.
Last season, Williams made 37 appearances across all competitions for Athletic Club, scoring eight goals and registering 19 assists. Additionally, the winger played a role in winning the 2024 Copa del Rey.
