RMC Sport’s Fabrice Hawkins reported on Saturday that Paris Saint-Germain is trying to negotiate personal terms with Athletic Club’s Nico Williams. As a result, one expert weighed in on the high demand the 21-year-old is generating.
Williams has attracted attention from several top European clubs this summer as they seek to strengthen their attacks. His standout performance at UEFA Euro 2024, where he played a crucial role in Spain’s victory, has significantly boosted his value.
Last month, CaughtOffside reported that Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Tottenham, Barcelona, and Paris Saint-Germain are all interested in Williams.
Amid the ongoing rumors, CBS Sports’ Jonathan Johnson weighed in on the high demand that surrounds the Euro winner.
“It took that kind of performance in a title-winning Spain team for him to really confirm why he should be on the shortlist of a number of big clubs,” Johnson said on the latest PSG Talking episode. “He’s been linked with a number of Premier League clubs as well. No surprise that he’s now going to be in high demand.
“Athletic Club are always very clear on their top talents. When there’s a minimum free release clause in the contract, you pay that, you don’t negotiate the price, you pay the value of the minimum free release clause, and the deal gets done.”
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reports that Barcelona is still awaiting Williams’ decision. Premier League clubs and PSG are also closely monitoring the situation, but there’s a feeling he might prefer to stay in Spain.
Romano also mentions that Athletic Club has already made an offer with a higher salary to keep him. A final decision is expected soon.
