Tottenham and Manchester United Boost? Expert Advises PSG Against Pursuing Young Ligue 1 Talents

Olympique Lyonnais star Rayan Cherki might be on his way to Paris Saint-Germain. At 20, he’s catching the eye of several top clubs like Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, and PSG.

Last season, the Parisians picked up Bradley Barcola from OL. Could they do it again this summer? If Cherki gets his way, a move to the reigning Ligue 1 champions is on the cards.

According to a recent report from L’Equipe, PSG made an initial offer to Lyon, putting €15 million on the table along with an extra €3 million in bonuses. However, Lyon turned down the proposal because they want a significant sell-on clause included in any deal.

Jonathan Johnson from CBS Sports appeared on the latest episode of PSG Talking to discuss why pursuing Rayan Cherki and Désiré Doué, who’s on the radar of Arsenal and Manchester United, wouldn’t make sense.

“I find it difficult to imagine Cherki settling in properly at PSG,” Johnson said. “I also don’t think there’s as much of an obvious need for somebody like him to the skill set of Désiré Doué.

“I think the thing with Doué is many people think they look at him and assume that he can be versatile and played sort of anywhere across that sort of attacking midfield range, whether it’s central, whether it’s on one of the sides but actually, if you speak to sort of anybody in and around Doué, who’s known sort of his development, he is very much a No. 10 and sort of anything other than that position is a bit of a waste.

“And with that in mind, I’m not sure that either of them are particularly the best fit for this PSG squad, given the talent that PSG already has in the positions that they play best in.”

The 20-year-old Lyon had a notable season, featuring in 39 matches, scoring three goals, and providing nine assists for OL. Doué has impressed with 43 appearances across all competitions this past 2023-24 season, notching four goals and six assists.
