On Tuesday at the Parc des Princes, Paris Saint-Germain bid farewell to their UEFA Champions League journey with a 1-0 loss to Borussia Dortmund, sealing a 2-0 aggregate defeat in the semifinals.
The defeat signals the conclusion of an era. It seems probable that Kylian Mbappé played his final Champions League match for PSG, with numerous reports indicating a move to Real Madrid in the upcoming summer transfer window.
PSG took a whopping 30 shots in the match, but only five found their mark, while four hit the woodwork. It seemed like luck wasn’t favoring them when it came to scoring goals. Meanwhile, Dortmund managed to clinch victory with just one goal from Mats Hummels in the 50th minute.
After Hummels’ goal, Luis Enrique and his team couldn’t muster a comeback, ultimately allowing Dortmund to secure their place in the Champions League final at Wembley Stadium.
Once the final whistle blew, part of the focus shifted to Mbappé and his future. Nonetheless, the Frenchman sidestepped questions regarding when he’ll announce his intentions.
“My last Champions League match with PSG? This season, it’s certain we won’t be playing anymore,” Mbappé told the French media (h/t Canal Supporters).
“Now, as I said before, we’re very disappointed with today’s result. We wanted to win. We tried to bring the right elements to win, but in knockout matches in the Champions League, you need to be efficient, and we weren’t quite there in both games.”
