Fabian Ruiz Opens Up About PSG’s Mood After Champions League Exit to Borussia Dortmund

Paris Saint-Germain lost 1-0 (with a 2-0 aggregate) to Borussia Dortmund in the semifinals on Tuesday at the Parc des Princes, marking the end of their UEFA Champions League journey.

The French team had a total of 30 shots during the match, but only five managed to hit the target, with four others striking the woodwork. It seemed luck wasn’t on their side that Tuesday evening in terms of scoring. On the other hand, Dortmund only needed one goal from Mats Hummels in the 50th minute to secure their win.

Following the goal from Hummels, Luis Enrique and his team failed to find a response, leading to Dortmund securing their spot in the Champions League final at Wembley Stadium. PSG midfielder Fabian Ruiz spoke to Canal Plus postgame and shared the mood of the squad after the disappointing loss.

“I believe they took advantage of the opportunities they had,” Ruiz told the French media outlet (h/t Canal Supporters). “Whether it was in the first leg or the second, they were more effective. We created plenty of chances in both matches, hit the post several times, and faced goalkeeper saves. We left everything on the pitch; the supporters were incredible until the last second. Unfortunately, we lost.

“The feeling after the match? It’s sadness. We gave our all, left it all out there. We had big dreams in this competition. We generated numerous opportunities to win the match, but the ball just wouldn’t go in. We’re sad, and we hate it, but that’s football. Sometimes, it’s not just about the chances we create. We have to keep going.”

The defeat signals the conclusion of an era. It seems probable that Kylian Mbappé’s time with PSG in the Champions League has come to an end, with reports suggesting he’ll be moving to Real Madrid this summer.
