FC Barcelona manager Xavi Hernández spoke with reporters on Saturday and touched on the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals matchup against Paris Saint-Germain.
Although the Spanish club will host the second leg, the 44-year-old doesn’t believe that the Catalan side is the favorite in the matchup. Xavi notes that the Parisians should have that title heading into the first leg.
“Perhaps yes, perhaps the role of the favorite would be given more to PSG,” Xavi said (h/t Mundo Deportivo). “Beyond the history of the two teams, it is true that we have more Champions League titles than them. But at the moment, PSG, especially economically, has the ability to sign players.
“If you look at what they have spent this season compared to us, the situation is not the same. In terms of enthusiasm, desire, and dreams, they won’t beat us. The team is very motivated; yesterday, we saw the draw together, and people are positive and happy to compete against anyone.
“We have drawn Paris, one of the toughest opponents, and we have to show it on the field. It’s easy to talk and then not follow through. Talking on the field is the decisive moment of the season, and what we have to do is show our talent and worth on the field. That’s all.”
Xavi will need to face his former coach, Luis Enrique, who also commented on facing the Spanish side. As a result, the PSG boss might know what to expect from the young tactician.
The Spanish tactician shared his thoughts on the draw and noted his excitement to return to Barcelona since he spent time as a player and coach there.
The winner of this matchup will face either Atletico Madrid or Borussia Dortmund, so a victory in the quarterfinals will have PSG or Barcelona on a clear path to the final in London.
