Newcastle’s €115M Gem Could Be the Missing Piece for PSG, Expert Suggests

During the January transfer window, the name of Newcastle United’s Bruno Guimarães surfaced as a potential target for Paris Saint-Germain. With some money to spend this summer, the capital club could be targeting the Brazilian again to bolster their midfield.

Guimarães boasts a €115 million release clause that isn’t a wild figure. As a result, PSG must activate it or approach that amount to secure the coveted midfielder. Furthermore, Guimarães would be a missing piece in the squad, one expert says.

CBS Sports journalist Jonathan Johnson spoke with PSG Talk and shared his thoughts on the Parisians pursuing Guimarães this summer.

“I think Guimarães is certainly someone who is a really intriguing possibility because, one, he would fit very well in this team at this moment in time,” Johnson said. “He’s almost basically what PSG are missing—what they’ve been looking for. I also think that with Newcastle’s situation, we know that they’re probably going to have to sacrifice one big name and that there hasn’t been any breaker in terms of the contract extension for Guimarães just yet.”

“So for me, I think that given the choice between those two names, I certainly think that Guimarães would probably be the more realistic one or the one that I would put money on PSG to sign if I was given the choice of the two.”

In January, a report revealed PSG manager Luis Enrique’s fascination with Guimarães, placing the Brazilian midfielder at the forefront of the 53-year-old’s plans to bolster the midfield.

The capital club boasts promising players in the midfield. However, incorporating Guimarães would bring that marquee player to anchor the position. It will be interesting to see if the Newcastle star is open to a return to Ligue 1.
