Paris Saint-Germain secured a 3-1 win over LOSC Lille on Saturday night without Kylian Mbappé playing a minute in the contest. The 25-year-old picked up an injury during the week in the Coupe de France win over Stade Brestois.

Mbappé didn’t appear in the starting 11 in the contest against Lille, and after Les Dogues scored first, it seemed that PSG would need the Frenchman. However, the Parisians responded, scoring three unanswered goals for the victory.

More importantly, though, they didn’t need to use the 2018 FIFA World Cup winner. The forward will now be rested for the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 first-leg match against Real Sociedad.

PSG manager Luis Enrique spoke postgame and provided an update on Mbappé ahead of Wednesday’s clash against the Spanish club.

“We didn’t want to take any risks,” Enrique said after the win (h/t Paris Fans). “It didn’t make sense. You saw the game. If it were a final, he could have played. But I think it was very smart on his part and mine that he didn’t play.”

PSG fighting off adversity and not needing to break the glass to put Mbappé in the game also shows that the team doesn’t need to depend on their star to get them out of a tough situation. Still, it will be good to see him on the pitch this upcoming week.
