Kylian Mbappé will reportedly play in La Liga with Real Madrid next season. However, could the Frenchman have gone sooner, but to a club that isn’t Los Blancos?
Well, the Paris Saint-Germain star had an opportunity to go to Barcelona. Before moving to his hometown club in 2017, Què T’hi Jugues’ Sique Rodríguez revealed that Mbappé nearly went to the Catalan side.
When Neymar Jr. left Barcelona for PSG, the Spanish side needed a replacement and had the funds to purchase any player. Furthermore, Mbappé saw a move to Camp Nou with good eyes, considering the playing time he’d have.
“The Catalan club had earmarked Mbappé to replace Neymar. Mbappé saw the possibility of going to Barça when Neymar left. He thought he could get more minutes than at Madrid,” Rodríguez said (h/t Le10Sport). “Barça thought it was better to opt for Dembélé out of necessity.”
The 2018 FIFA World Cup winner already has a memorable moment against Barcelona before his reported move to Spain.
Mbappé scored a hat trick in a UEFA Champions League knockout stage match in 2021 against the La Liga team. Should the move to Real Madrid become official, more memories could be made against Barcelona.
