Juventus Icon Voices Confidence in Donnarumma Amid Criticism

Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma has been under the microscope of criticism for his recent performances. Nonetheless, Juventus legend Gianluigi Buffon believes his compatriot can withstand the critics.

The 24-year-old’s error led to the only Newcastle United goal in the 1-1 draw against the Magpies on the UEFA Champions League’s Matchday 5. Then, Donnarumma received a red card less than 10 minutes into the game last Sunday.

This weekend, Donnarumma will not play due to his suspension. As a result, Arnau Ténas will likely get the start, and the rumbling over a possible controversy can begin. Nonetheless, according to Buffon, all this is something the former AC Milan star can withstand.

“I think Gianluigi Donnarumma now has good armor when it comes to criticism [and] questioning himself,” Buffon said (h/t Paris Fans). “I believe that when you are considered one of the three best goalkeepers in the world, it is normal today that every mistake gives rise to this kind of controversy.”

It will be interesting to see what manager Luis Enrique decides to do heading into a must-win match against Borussia Dortmund on Matchday 6. Donnarumma would not have played for mainly two games. Meanwhile, Ténas is likely to have played both contests.

Would it be wise to play Donnarumma, or if Ténas impresses, does Enrique ride the hot hand?
