Ex-Monaco Ace Reveals Why Real Madrid Trumped PSG and Man City in 2014

Colombian football star James Rodriguez is among the many players who made a name for themselves in Ligue 1.

The 32-year-old spent one season with AS Monaco and was sold to Real Madrid in the summer of 2014 after an incredible performance at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, becoming a household name.

Afterward, Rodriguez made his significant move to Real Madrid. However, the attacking midfielder notes that Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester were keen on him that summer.

Nonetheless, the former Bayern Munich player noted why he decided to join Los Blancos rather than head to Paris or the Premier League.

“PSG and Manchester City loved me, but I wanted glory; I wanted Real Madrid,” Rodriguez said. “There is nothing like Real Madrid. City, Madrid, and Paris came together. The other two teams offered a higher contract, and in the end, the one who convinced me was the president.”

PSG outpaced Real Madrid to sign Kylian Mbappé, a future star from AS Monaco, too. So, the Parisians would prefer losing the Rodriguez sweepstakes in 2014, as they won the race to land a better player in 2017. But this won’t be the last time that the French giants whiff on a pursuit of a player.
