The relationship between Lionel Messi and Paris Saint-Germain is strained right now. Messi left the capital club this summer as a free agent, eventually joining MLS side Inter Miami.
Nonetheless, with the Argentine back in Paris for the Ballon d’Or ceremony and after winning the award for the eighth time, Messi had to give a speech. However, it was during the address that he left out mentioning PSG.
L’Equipe’s Loïc Tanzi reported details of what transpired in the final weeks leading to his exit from the French giants. According to the French journalist, the last weeks of the adventure between PSG and Messi were punctuated with deep disagreements.
Furthermore, Tanzi notes that today, the links are not entirely broken between the two parties. Still, they are strained, and each party expected much more from the other.

When Messi won the 2022 FIFA World Cup, there was an expectation that he’d extend his stay. Nonetheless, with PSG crashing out of the UEFA Champions League round of 16 to Bayern Munich and barely holding off RC Lens to win Ligue 1, the capital club likely wanted change.
