Luis Enrique: PSG’s Effort Against Newcastle Deserved a Better Outcome

Paris Saint-Germain had 82 percent of possession, fired off 17 total shots, and had an expected goal of 2.77 in their 1-1 draw against Newcastle United on Tuesday night.

The capital club did receive a controversial penalty call in their favor, leading to Kylian Mbappé converting the shot. Nonetheless, manager Luis Enrique feels the outcome shouldn’t have been a draw.

Enrique spoke to reporters postgame and noted that PSG’s efforts should’ve resulted in three points.

“I think we deserved to win,” Enrique told reporters (h/t Canal Supporters). “We played a very complete match; we were better than Newcastle, and the result does not reflect that. But it’s football. It’s not always the best who wins or the one who creates the most chances.”

The Ligue 1 team could not afford to lose, as they would face disaster by being relegated to the Europa League instead of advancing to the knockout stages of the Champions League.

Nonetheless, a draw still allows PSG to control their destiny. However, they encounter the daunting task of needing a road win against Borussia Dortmund. The Parisians have yet to win any away games, so defeating the Bundesliga club is complicated.

If Enrique and Co. want to advance to the round of 16, they’ll have to earn it.
