Kylian Mbappé scored a penalty kick to salvage a 1-1 draw for Paris Saint-Germain against Newcastle United at the Parc des Princes on Tuesday night.
However, the penalty call doesn’t come without controversy, considering it was in stoppage time with the Magpies so close to winning the contest.
Newcastle striker Alexander Isak offered his reaction on the penalty call that took a hit on their chances to advance to the UEFA Champions League knockout stages.
“My first reaction was that it wasn’t, but I haven’t seen it back,” Isak told TNT Sports (h/t talkSPORT). “Hopefully, if the penalty was given, then it should have been. We have to trust the refs. I’m very proud of the team as it’s not an easy place to come, and they’ve not lost here in some time. We became tired at the end with the defending, but unfortunately, we couldn’t hold on.
“We always want to win, but if you can’t win then at this point we need to have it all to play for in the last round.
“It’s a proud moment for me [to score my first Champions League goal] after not scoring in my first two games.”
While the result isn’t ideal for the Ligue 1 side, the loss would’ve been disastrous considering the team was facing the UEFA Europa League in the face. Nonetheless, a draw still allows PSG to control their destiny.
However, they encounter the daunting task of needing a road win against Borussia Dortmund. This Champions League group stage has seen PSG unable to win on the road. So, seeing if the Parisian can finally win away from home will be interesting.
