The Lionel Messi era at Paris Saint-Germain ended this past summer with the capital club opting not to extend the Argentine and allowing him to leave as a free agent to Inter Miami.
While the 2023-24 season is ongoing, the topic of the 2022 FIFA World Cup winner is coming up again as RMC Sport’s Daniel Riolo hit at Messi for his performance and PSG for recruiting a player whose head and heart weren’t in Paris.
“Messi used PSG,” Riolo said on Le Figaro Live (h/t Le10Sport). “He takes people for fools. But once again, he is not necessarily the one responsible. It is those who thought it was a good idea to recruit him.”
In the end, this was all a business transaction. Messi got to prepare for the 2022 World Cup; meanwhile, PSG benefitted financially from the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner’s presence.
Nonetheless, PSG has moved on from the superstar era after letting Messi leave and selling Neymar Jr. to Al-Hilal. The Ligue 1 giants prioritize building a team and having French talent who can connect to the city and club, especially the players from the Greater Paris Area.
Will it work? Only time will tell.
