Paris Saint-Germain took a gamble this summer, opting not to move off from Kylian Mbappé. The capital club initially had the 24-year-old training with the undesirable players and was keen on selling him after he opted not to trigger his option to extend his contract until 2025.
However, with the exits of Lionel Messi and eventually Neymar Jr., the situation changed, and the Frenchman was brought back into the first-team squad. Still, the winger has yet to sign a contract extension, so he can walk next summer as a free agent.
So what’s PSG’s end game here after keeping the 2018 FIFA World Cup winner? ESPN FC’s Julien Laurens discusses the future of Mbappé at PSG after club president Nasser Al Khelaifi praised the team’s “renewed spirit.”
“They’re still hoping that at some point they’ll sit down and that he might commit for a bit longer,” Laurens said recently on ESPN FC. “He might still leave [next] summer, to be fair, but they just leave that door open for now.
“I think you could see that these teams, especially in the last two games against Lyon and Lens, are playing well together, playing well as a team. I think he’s very important for Luis Enrique.”
Laurens also recently stated that Real Madrid remains the outstanding favorite. However, if the PSG star decides to test free agency, he cannot rule out a Premier League club like Liverpool out of the race.
