The Super League idea isn’t completely dead, as FC Barcelona and Real Madrid remain in the project. Juventus began the process of officially pulling out in July, leaving the two Spanish clubs standing alone.
As a result, Paris Saint-Germain and European Club Association president Nasser Al-Khelaifi wants the two La Liga sides to abandon the project. The PSG boss is inviting the two mutineers to turn back two years after leaving the union for the Super League project.
The European Super League was announced on April 18, 2021. Twelve top clubs from England, Spain, and Italy announced the launch of a new competition that will compete with UEFA’s Champions League.
“These clubs know that I never mention their names,” Al-Khelaifi told Polish media Meczyki (h/t Foot Mercato). “I only tell them and advise them to come back to ECA as soon as they want. Let them join the family. They are welcome , recalled the president of PSG. Juventus has already withdrawn from the Super League project. They should do the same.
“I am neither against Barcelona nor against Real Madrid. I’m not going to exclude anyone. I am against conflict and fighting. I met [Barcelona President] Joan Laporta and told him the same thing. The Super League today is a joke. She was dead even before her announcement.”
The European Super League initially consisted of Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool, AC Milan, Inter Milan, Atletico Madrid, Juventus, Barcelona, and Real Madrid.
As a result of the negative reaction, nine clubs decided to pull out of the project. However, despite the criticism, Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Juventus chose to remain in it.
